VICTORIA DAY
Known in BC as “May two-four” after the date of Queen Victoria’s birthday, May 24 (and also coincidentally the number of beers in a case), the Victoria Day weekend is a huge celebration across the country! As the first long weekend in warmer weather, it’s a fantastic opportunity to get out and have fun!
If you’re in the Victoria area, you can take the kids to the Victoria Day Parade! A longstanding tradition that has existed in BC for over 120 years, this is one of the best parades you’ll ever see. It’s over three hours long and snakes through Victoria’s beautiful downtown core, filled with fantastic floats, toe-tapping music and candy for the kids! This year it takes place on May 19 – don’t miss out!
Want more Victoria Day fun? Then check out the Victoria Highland Games & Celtic Festival on the same day! Celebrating Canada’s Scottish heritage, the games are entering their 156th year… meaning they’re older than Canada itself! There will be music and arts performances throughout the weekend, as well as demonstrations of traditional dancing and sword-fighting, athletic competitions like the caber toss, and a performance by the award-winning Simon Fraser University Pipes and Drums band.
SWIFTSURE YACHT RACE
Want an exciting way to get out on the water and take part in a pulse-pounding but refined event? Then come to Victoria May 23-24 for the Swiftsure Yacht Race! This international organization will be hosting a race in Victoria’s waters, and the harbour will be chock full of fun events! Great music, good food, and experienced sailors vying for the crown of best captain on the waters of the Georgia Straight. What’s not to love?
