Outdoor Activities to Do in Victoria This Fall

Is there anywhere more beautiful than British Columbia in the fall? We think not! And, on Vancouver Island, there is something so magical about the season. It’s a great opportunity to get outdoors and enjoy some of the things that make Victoria so unique—whether it’s seeing nature at work or just getting out and about with your dog in some spectacular locations. Here are a couple of ways to do it!

Witness the Goldstream Salmon Run

The Goldstream River, in Goldstream Provincial Park, is well-known for its salmon spawning stream. Appearing in mid-October and for about nine weeks afterwards, an average of 30,000 salmon return to the stream each year. Most of them are Chum Salmon from the Gulf of Alaska, but Chinook and Coho Salmon have also been known to make their way back to the estuary. It’s an incredible sight to witness and a must-see if you’re visiting Victoria in the fall. If you do go, be sure to keep your dogs on a leash and out of the river, and avoid wearing anything bright, especially red, purple, and pink—the salmon can see those shades and it might disrupt their run!

Take a Scenic Hike or Walk with the Dog

If you have a dog, you know that you’re always looking for new and exciting locations for walks. And there is certainly no shortage of places to explore with your pooch in and around Victoria—and incredibly scenic ones, at that! Here are three of our nearby favourites.

Sandcut Beach

Known for its sweeping views and its unique waterfall created by the undercut of sandstone at the shoreline, Sandcut Beach is one of the most beautiful beaches in all of Greater Victoria. To get there, head towards the Pacific Marine Circle Route about 30 kilometres west from Sooke. From the parking area off the side of the road, you’ll hike through a short, dense trail to get to the beach.

Mount Doug Park

A local favourite, Mount Doug Park features big cedar trees and wide, well-marked walking trails that vary in intensity, from the easygoing forested surroundings of the lower area to the gorgeous panoramic view at the top.

Dallas Road

This other local favourite starts at Clover Point and continues along the path toward the Ogden Point Breakwater. You’ll hit a great off-leash area along the way, too.

At Days Inn Victoria on the Harbour, we are a proudly pet-friendly hotel. In fact, we even offer a special pet hotel deal which includes a one night accommodation in our Deluxe Double Room, a pet toy to take home and treat to enjoy upon arrival, and a bed and bowl for your furry friend.
